The accessory processes are the small, rough prominences found on the posterior aspects of the transverse processes of a lumbar vertebra.
They are the lumbar equivalents to the inferior tubercles that are found on the transverse processes of the twelfth thoracic vertebra and provide attachment sites for intertransversarii muscles.
