Description

The anterior surface is the smooth, flat area on the anterior aspect of the body of the sternum. It is one of the two surfaces, the other being the posterior surface, and is an area that is bounded by the superior, inferior and two lateral borders of the body of the sternum. It contains the transverse ridges of the sternum.

The anterior surface of the body of the sternum provides an origin site for the pectoralis major muscle and provides an attachment site for the sternocostal ligaments.
