Description

The external surface (lateral surface) is the rough, outer aspect of the mastoid part of temporal bone. It is one of two surfaces of the mastoid part of temporal bone, the other being the internal surface.

The external surface:

—consists of the mastoid process, mastoid notch, and groove for the occipital artery;

—provides origin sites for the posterior belly of digastric muscle and the occipital belly of occipitofrontalis muscle;

—provides insertion sites for the splenius capitis, longissimus capitis and sternocleidomastoid muscles.
