Description

The external surface (outer surface) of second rib is its smooth, convex, outer area. It is one of the two surfaces of the body of the second rib, the other being the internal surface.

The external surface of second rib consists of the angle, which is located on posterior part of the second rib, and the tuberosity for serratus anterior muscle, which is located on the middle part of the rib. It provides an origin site for the serratus anterior muscle and insertion sites for the scalenus posterior, serratus posterior superior, iliocostalis thoracis and levatores costarum breves muscles.
