Description

The external surface (ectocranial surface) is the smooth, convex area found along the outer aspect of the squamous part of frontal bone. It is one of two surfaces of the squamous part of frontal bone, the other being the internal surface.

The external surface consists of the frontal eminence, superciliary arch, glabella, temporal line, and the anterosuperior portion of the temporal fossa. In some individuals, a metopic suture (frontal suture) may also be present along this surface.

The external surface provides an origin site for temporalis muscle and an attachment site for the temporal fascia.
