Description
The greater horns (greater cornua) are the two thin, oblique, posterolaterally located parts of the hyoid bone. On its corresponding side, each greater horn of hyoid bone:
—extends posterosuperiorly from a lateral end of the body of hyoid bone;
—is continuous superomedially with a lesser horn of hyoid bone;
—consists of a tubercle of hyoid bone;
—provides an origin site for middle pharyngeal constrictor and hyoglossus muscles and an insertion site for a thyrohyoid muscle;
—provides attachment sites for the thyrohyoid membrane and a lateral thyrohyoid ligament.
