Description

The lateral borders are the irregular lateral margins of the body of the sternum. They form two of the four borders of the body of the sternum, the other two being the superior and inferior borders, and each lateral border contains;

—a superiorly located demifacet, which forms the lower part of the second costal notch;

—the third to sixth costal notches;

—an inferiorly located demifacet, which forms the upper part of the seventh costal notch.

The lateral borders of the body of the sternum provide attachment sites for the external intercostal membranes and the sternocostal ligaments.
