Description

The lateral sacral crest (external sacral crest) is the rough, vertical ridge found along the dorsal surface of the sacrum. It is located lateral to the posterior sacral foramina and is formed by the transverse tubercles, which are the remnants of the transverse processes of the sacral vertebrae.

The sacrum has two lateral sacral crests, one on its right side and one on its left side. These make up two of the five crests found on the dorsal surface of the sacrum, the other three being the two intermediate sacral crests and the one median sacral crest.
