Description

The mandibular symphysis (mental symphysis or symphysis menti) is the vertical, sometimes indistinct, line found along the midline on the body of the mandible. It marks the site of fusion between the right and left halves of the mandible that unite during its development.

On the external surface of the body of the mandible, the lower portion of the mandibular symphysis is continuous inferiorly with the mental protuberance. On the internal surface of the body of the mandible, the superior and inferior mental spines are found along the lower portion of the mandibular symphysis.
