Description
The manubrium is the wide, quadrilateral, upper part of the sternum. It is located at the level of the third and fourth thoracic vertebrae and contains two surfaces (anterior and posterior) and four borders (superior, inferior and two lateral).
The manubrium of the sternum articulates with the:
—body of the sternum, forming the manubriosternal joint;
—right and left clavicles, forming the sternoclavicular joints;
—costal cartilages of the right and left first ribs, forming the first costosternal joints;
—costal cartilages of the right and left second ribs, forming the second costosternal joints.
