Description

The mastoid part is the posterolaterally located, thick portion of the temporal bone. It is continuous:

—anteromedially, with the petrous part;

—anteriorly, with both the squamous and tympanic parts.

The mastoid part consists of:

—two surfaces (internal and external);

—two borders (parietal and occipital);

—a mastoid antrum and air cells;

—mastoid and stylomastoid foramina.

The mastoid part articulates:

—superiorly, with the mastoid angle of the parietal bone, forming the parietomastoid suture;
