Description

The necks of the mandible (condylar necks) are the two constricted, inferior ends of the condylar processes of the mandible. On its corresponding side, each neck of mandible:

—is continuous superiorly with a mandibular condyle and continuous inferiorly with a ramus of mandibles;

—consists of a pterygoid fovea;

—provides an insertion site for a lateral pterygoid muscle and an attachment site for the lateral ligament of a temporomandibular joint.
