Description

The seventh costal notches are the lateral facing articular areas found along the lateral borders of the sternum. They are one of the seven pairs of articular facets that are found on the lateral borders of the entire sternum.

Each seventh costal facet is formed by the combination of two demifacets:

—The upper demifacet is located at the inferior end of the lateral border of the body of the sternum.

—The lower demifacet is located at the superior end of the lateral border of the xiphoid process.

Each seventh costal notch articulates with the seventh costal cartilage on its respective side, forming the seventh costosternal joints.
