Description

The superior articular processes (superior zygapophyses) are the two upwardly projecting processes found along the superolateral aspects of the axis (second cervical vertebra). They extend superiorly from the junctions between the pedicles and vertebral body.

The superior articular processes of the axis consist of superior articular facets that face superolaterally. They articulate with the inferior articular processes of the atlas, forming the lateral atlantoaxial joints.
