Description

The superior surface (upper surface) of first rib is one of the two surfaces of its body, the other being the inferior surface. Unlike the other eleven ribs, which have internal and external surfaces, the unique orientation of the first rib gives it superior and inferior surfaces.

The superior surface of first rib consists of the groove for the subclavian artery, the groove for the subclavian vein, and the scalene tubercle, which is located in between these grooves. It provides:

—origin sites for the serratus anterior and subclavius muscles;

—insertion sites for the levatores costarum breves, scalenus anterior and scalenus medius muscles;

—an attachment site for the costoclavicular ligament.
