Description

The temporal surface (external or lateral surface) is the smooth, convex area found along the external aspect of the squamous part of temporal bone. It is one of two surfaces of the squamous part of temporal bone, the other being the cerebral surface.

The temporal surface consists of the groove for middle temporal artery, supramastoid crest, suprameatal triangle, suprameatal spine, and the posteroinferior portion of the temporal fossa. It provides an origin site for the temporalis muscle and an attachment site for the temporal fascia. The zygomatic process extends anterolaterally from the temporal surface.
