Description

The transverse processes are the two small, laterally projecting processes of the atlas (first cervical vertebra). On its corresponding side, each transverse process of atlas:

—consists of anterior and posterior roots that extend from a lateral mass;

—consists of a foramen transversarium;

—provides attachment sites for muscles of the neck and upper back.
