Description

The transverse ridges (lines) of the sternum are the three horizontal linear elevations that cross the anterior surface of the bone, where:

—the superior transverse ridge is located between the right to left third costal notches;

—the middle transverse ridge is located between the right to left fourth costal notches;

—the inferior transverse ridge is located between the right to left fifth costal notches.

The transverse ridges of the sternum each mark the sites of fusion between the four sternebrae that unite to form the body of the sternum during its development.
