Description

The true ribs are one of the three groups of ribs in the thoracic cage, the other two being the false and floating ribs. The true ribs consist of the first to seventh ribs and are classified as “true” because their corresponding costal cartilages attach directly to the sternum.

The true ribs are also known as vertebrosternal ribs since they articulate both:

- posteriorly, with the vertebrae;

- anteriorly, with numerically corresponding costal cartilages that are attached directly to the sternum.
