Tuberculum costae primae

Description

The tubercle of first rib is a small prominence on the external surface of the junction between its neck and its body. It consists of two parts:

—a smooth, medially located articular facet, which articulates with the transverse process of first thoracic vertebra;

—a rough, laterally located non-articular part, which provides the attachment site for the costotransverse ligament.

The angle of first rib is obscure because it is located in the same area as its tubercle.

Overall, only the first to tenth ribs have a tubercle, while the eleventh and twelfth ribs lack this bony feature.
