Description

The zygomatic process is the long, thin, anterolateral projection found along the external aspect of the squamous part of temporal bone. The posteriorly located base of the zygomatic process extends laterally from the inferior portion of the squamous part of temporal bone, where it has superior and inferior surfaces and anterior and posterior roots. As it travels anteriorly, the zygomatic process twists and its superior and inferior surfaces become medial and lateral surfaces, respectively, and its anterior and posterior roots become inferior and superior margins, respectively.

The zygomatic process:

—consists of an articular tubercle;

—provides an origin site for the masseter muscle and attachment sites for the temporal fascia and the lateral ligament of the temporomandibular joint;

—articulates with the temporal process of zygomatic bone, forming the temporozygomatic suture;

—forms the posterior portion of the zygomatic arch, while the temporal process of zygomatic bone forms its anterior portion.
