Structure/Morphology
Periosteal veins arise from the microvascular network in cortical bone and form efferent venules which course towards the periosteum and drain into the periosteal venous network (Buck and Dumanian, 2012).
Anatomical Relations
In cortical bone, periosteal veins follow the same course as the periosteal arteries within the perforating canals and form venous plexus between the two layers of the periosteum.
Function
Periosteal veins drain blood from the outer one third of cortical bone and periosteum.
