The endometrium sits on the luminal side of the myometrium while the perimetrium sits external to the myometrial layer.

Function

The myometrial layer is not shed during menses. During pregnancy, the myometrial layer undergoes extensive proliferation to accommodate the growth of the developing fetus. In addition, it undergoes coordinated contractions during labor.
