Refresh your memory using flash cards

The app is designed like a set of flash cards. Each card shows a reaction, its mechanism, examples from peer-reviewed literature and gives access to the latest publications in Reaxys. In collaboration with Professor Carreira we ensured the app covers all fundamental reactions that should be part of every chemist’s toolkit: from the best-known ones to the ones only Nobel Prize winners remember!

Hints to optimally use the ReactionFlash app

Modes in ReactionFlash:

You can view the reaction, the mechanism, examples from Reaxys and you can look up more examples in Reaxys (provided you have the appropriate license).

Furthermore, you can test your knowledge in the Quiz mode (“Puzzle” icon).

Copy or translate reaction text:

Press and hold a reaction text for 2 seconds. You choose Translate which presents the translation of the reaction text in any language you select. The translation quality may not be perfect, but it should help you to understand the reaction text.

Create your personal sets:

You can add Named Reactions to a Personal Set with the "More" button ("...") on any Named Reaction card and select “Add to Set” or by selecting one or more Named Reactions from the list of Named Reactions in the Library. There you can also rename or delete Personal Sets.

Review and being tested on a set you created:

You can start or resume a quiz from a Named Reaction card with the "Puzzle" icon. In this mode the quiz will continue with other reactions from the current set. Alternatively, when displaying a reaction set, select "Start Quiz" from the "More" menu to test yourself on that set. Exit and suspend the quiz with another tap on the "Puzzle" icon."

Filter a Set: Allows you to filter the set to study, based on

  • Not Viewed / meaning the Named Reactions you have not seen yet

  • Viewed - Not Tested / meaning you have seen the Named Reaction(s), but they were not shown in the Quiz yet

  • Tested - Not Mastered / meaning you were presented the Named Reaction(s) in the Quiz, but you were not able to provide the correct answer at the first attempt.

Share Named Reactions:

You can share one or a set of Named Reactions with a friend.

Sharing one Named Reaction: On the Named Reaction card, select the “Share” option in the “More” menu, select method to share the reaction.

Sharing a set: Go to Library, select a set, tap on the “More” icon, select Named Reactions you want to share, tap on “Share” icon, select method to share the set.

If you are teaching chemistry:

You may want to create a set with Named Reactions as described above. You then share that set with your students. Students will receive a link that will import the set into their ReactionFlash instance. They now can focus their study on the set you provided them.

Shuffle:

Tap on the “Shuffle” icon (round with two crossing arrows) to allow the app to propose randomly the next Named Reaction when swiping to the left or to the right, instead of presenting the next Named Reaction in alphabetical order.

Zoom:

Pinch (like you would do on a picture) or double tap on a drawing to zoom it in or out.

Magnifying Glass:

Press and hold on any drawing to obtain a magnifying glass to view more details in the drawing.

Drawing conventions:

Some of you may be surprised by the drawing conventions – we use the Reaxys drawing conventions which differ from conventions you may be familiar with (e.g., pentavalent nitrogen in a nitro group).
