James E. House is an Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, Illinois State University and Scholar in Residence, Illinois Wesleyan University, USA. He received BS and MA degrees from Southern Illinois University and the PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana.

In his 32 years at Illinois State, he taught a variety of courses in inorganic and physical chemistry. He has authored almost 150 publications in chemistry journals, many dealing with reactions in solid materials, as well as books on chemical kinetics, quantum mechanics, and inorganic chemistry.

Dr. House was a visiting professor at the University of Illinois and has extensive experience as an industrial consultant in the area of kinetics.  He was active in the Illinois Academy of Science, serving as its President in 1976.  He also served as the editor of the ISAS Transactions for several years and was elected a Fellow of the Academy.  He was elected Professor of the Year in 2011 by the student body at Illinois Wesleyan University and was elected to the Southern Illinois University Chemistry Alumni Hall of Fame in 2018. He has authored several books for Elsevier, including Principles of Chemical Kinetics (2007), Inorganic Chemistry (2015), Descriptive Inorganic Chemistry (2008, 2012, 2019), and the Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics (1998, 2003, 2017).
