Tomas Martin

University of Bristol, UK - EiC of Materials Today Communications

Dr Tomas Martin is Associate Professor of Materials Physics at the University of Bristol, EDF/Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Research Fellow in Correlative Microscopy for Nuclear Power, and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Materials Today Communications. As a Materials Physicist, Dr Martin is interested in how nano-scale changes in the structure of materials build into large-scale behaviours. He uses a combination of materials characterisation techniques to study how temperature, stress, chemistry and radiation can alter the structure of materials during use, and how we can design better materials for the future. Dr Martin's work uses a correlative experimental approach, combining electron microscopy, focused ion beam, atom probe tomography and X-ray techniques with image processing and modelling to show how materials evolve over multiple length scales. In particular, Dr Martin studies the degradation of metal alloys in industrial applications, working in partnership with companies in nuclear fission, fusion, aerospace and renewable energy. He also studies the electricity grid of the future, modelling the new challenges as we move to a net zero energy system.
