Yutaka Watanabe is currently Professor at Department of Quantum Science and Energy Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, since 2008. He was also appointed Special Advisor to President (since 2014) and Director of Center for Fundamental Research on Nuclear Decommissioning, Tohoku University (since 2016). Watanabe is a graduate of Tohoku University and received bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in engineering in 1985, 1987, and 1991, respectively. After he earned his doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, he spent a couple of years as a Post-Doc at the Nuclear Engineering Department at MIT. He was appointed Senior Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, Tohoku University, in 1993 and promoted to Associate Professor in 1996 and to Professor in 2008. Watanabe’s academic interests have been consistently extended to materials degradation. His recent research subjects and projects are based on mechanistic understanding of material-water interactions and aiming ageing management of power plants.
