An Austrian educated native, Dr. Sabine Szunerits (ORCID ID: 0000-0002-1567-4943) received her Ph.D. from Queen Mary and Westfield College (University of London, London, UK) in 1998. She undertook postdoctoral work at the ENS Paris, Tufts University, Boston, MA, ENSCPB, Bordeaux, France, and CEA Grenoble, France, before starting her independent research career as a Professor in 2004 at the INPGrenoble. In 2009 she joined the University of Lille, notably the Institute of Electronics, Microelectronics and nanotechnology (IEMN), as Full Professor in Chemistry. She is currently on a one-year sabbatical leave at the Danube Private University (DPU), Austria. Her research focus is on the use of material science and chemistry to tackle unmet medical related problems such as the development of therapies against viral and bacterial infections using nanoparticles, sensitive bacterial and viral diagnostics, or transdermal/buccal/ocular delivery of therapeutic drugs. The work is published in> 500 peer reviewed papers, with research reviews present in 24 book chapters. She has in edited 4 books and has 10 patents pending (two licensed). She was co-Editor in Chief of Sensors and Diagnostics (RSC) from 2020-2024 and is currently part of the editorial team of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (Springer) and editorial board member of ACS Omega, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, and ACS Sensors. Since 2022 she is elected member of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). 2018 she was awarded the “médaille d’argent du CNRS,” and in 2022 given the rank of Chevalier in the Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur of France.
