Daniel Rios-Barrera

Daniel got his PhD in 2014 from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) Campus Juriquilla. From 2014 to 2020 he did his postdoctoral work in the lab of Maria Leptin at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany. Since 2020, he is a group leader at the Institute for Biomedical Research at UNAM in Mexico City. His team is interested in studying mechanisms of morphogenesis at multiple scales, from subcellular principles to whole tissue interactions. Specifically, the lab focuses on the development of the Drosophila tracheal system, an epithelium that exploits basic cellular machinery to build tubes and that interacts with a range of different tissues and environments to allow gas exchange. Current projects of the lab explore the role of vesicle trafficking in tracheal morphogenesis and the coordination between tracheal development and whole-embryo remodeling. Daniel is also the current Chair of the Mexico Chapter of the Marie Curie Alumni Association, and early career editor for the Journal of Cell Biology and for Molecular Biology of the Cell.
