Our mission

The world is at a defining moment where we are experiencing dramatic changes to our ecosystems, and the scientific consensus overwhelmingly points to human activity as a major contributing factor [...] The science shows that we are fast approaching global tipping points, which if surpassed will have catastrophic effects. Elsevier agrees that bold action is needed to limit the rise in average global temperatures to well below 2 degrees above preindustrial levels.

Elsevier Climate Emergency Statement 2021

At Elsevier, we are using data combined with content and subject expertise to gain unique insights into how research can accelerate efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change. As a company, we are committed to the rapid reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, aiming to achieve net zero emissions before 2050.

With an estimated 75% of anthropogenic emissions deriving from energy sources, the transformation of power systems and integration of renewable sources are critical drivers in achieving pathways to net zero.

We aim to accelerate the energy transition through the development of critical new resources consolidating and advancing research and practice across our diverse lists, directly contributing to the emerging sustainable smart energy system of tomorrow.

We are continuously working toward adopting and communicating a positive stance for the reduction of CO2 emissions across all areas of energy, engineering and the environment. Building on Elsevier meeting its Step 1 and Step 2 environmental goals and achieving its targeted emissions reduction set in 2015, we are going further by adopting a supportive sustainable approach to content acquisition.

By setting a precedent and tackling the most dynamic and critical areas of sustainability, we are working with our authors and editors through constant conversation to support their own missions, publishing their key findings and usable data to encourage a journey beyond learning, with the application of methods and practices in individual environments.

Aligning with our journal colleagues to build a strategy to match our audiences' values, our constant aim is to consider the key solutions needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and, from a content perspective, how can we back that fight?

Being an advocate and partner for sustainable advances it is our objective to continuously ask ourselves how can we help our authors and readership lead the change toward a cleaner, safer environment?
