Muhammad Iqbal worked as Professor and Head of Botany Department, Dean of Science, Chairman of Admission Committee and Vice-Chancellor at Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi (India). Specializing in the Developmental, Environmental and Medicinal Botany, he has an extensive record of publications, including original research papers, book chapters, books and numerous technical reports and book reviews.
Iqbal acted as President of the Academy of Environmental Biology (2006-2009), Vice-President of the Indian Botanical Society (2003-2004) and the International Society of Environmental Botanists (2013-18). He was a Visiting Scientist at South Korea and Poland under the Scientists Exchange Program of Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and a Visiting Professor at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
A Life Member of over two dozen scientific organizations and an elected Fellow of seven prestigious scientific organizations, including the Linnean Society of London (FLS) and the National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc), he is a recipient of over a dozen academic awards, including the H.L. Chakravarty Award of the Indian Science Congress Association (1986), Best Scientist Award of the National Environmental Science Academy, Prof. V. Puri Medal Award of the Indian Botanical Society, Excellent Researcher Award of King Saud University, Riyadh, and the Lifetime Achievement Award of Scifax Information & Analytics, India.
The Prime Minister of India nominated him to the Prize Committee for the coveted Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar (2006). His research interests include radial growth in vascular plants, plant-pollution interaction, stress crop physiology, phytoremediation and traditional herbal medicine.
